| it takes too much to please me; BASICS |
NAME: Steve Burnside AGE: 17 HEIGHT: 173CM WEIGHT: 67.5KG BLOOD TYPE: AB "NAME": Jules Lancaster ROOM: M93 ROOM MATE: Hattori Heiji: PHOTOS: x/x/x/x PERSONALITY:There are many dimensions to Steve. In the first half of the story, he's very childish and self-centered, as we see with his first conversation with Claire. After shooting at her, he merely gives a half-assed apology, just assumes she's not with Umbrella, and tells her his plan to get off the island. He didn't even bother to think that maybe she could be a spy. Nope. He just went right out into the open and spilled his guts to her. Also, his self-centered-ness really peaks at the beginning because he leaves Claire behind thinking that she'll slow him down. While this may be valid, it seems that Steve is far too wrapped up in his own survival to help a fellow comrade. At least, that is how it is at the beginning. Another example of his completely dumb-ass-ery is during the scene where he steals the golden Lugers and doesn't put them back despite the fact that he's basically getting cooked to death. Common sense would say, put the guns back. But no, this is Steve and him and common sense doesn't seem to coincide. So, he waits until Claire saves him, shows of his guns, refuses to give them to her when she asks, and bolts off on his own adventure once again without even saying a polite thank you, or how are you doing? It's as if his boyish mind doesn't even register what happened – he is far too caught up in himself. But Burnside isn't all bad; he actually begins to show off his more chivalrous characteristics when he, literally, dive-bombs out a window to rescue Claire from one the Bandersnatches. While this is incredibly stupid of him to do, it does show his childish compassion to be the "hero" of the adventure. Steve also hides his true emotions and that sounds like emo-BS, but it's true. Example A: Claire tried to get him to explain what happened to his family and Steve just gets completely flustered and yells, telling her he doesn't want to talk about it. On top of it, he just wastes a good clip-and-a-half of bullets for his sub-machine gun. I just think, because he didn't really have the proper upbringing during his vital years between fifteen years of age to seventeen, he doesn't know how to deal with stress. So he just yells and shoots things. I think the only thing that really brings him out his shell is when he has to kill his father and he finally breaks it to Claire about what happened to his family. I think that helped him break the surface, so he becomes a little more personal during the rest of the game. It'll also make him far more personal in Landel's, because he's sort of conquered that hurtle in his life. I think a lot of Steve's mind is geared towards having some kind of fun, despite the stress that surrounds him. I think in Landel's, he's going to be the kind of kid who wants to going exploring when night falls, despite anyone warning him otherwise. I also see him as the type to get into trouble fairly easy, whether it is him showing off too much, picking arguments with the people around him, or just running into something that could easily kick his ass. He is the fun loving sort, in a nutshell, but he does have some distinct qualities that make him mature when he needs to be. If there is a job that needs to be done, he'll do it. If there is someone that needs his help, he'll help them. But don't expect him not to make a bathroom joke or two. LOOKS: Steve has short reddish-brown hair that always seems to find its way into his face. His eyes are a baby-blue color and he's an extremely pale fellow. An average height, he looks like any young boy would look at his age; his lean and slightly baby-faced. |
| high fives and corporate anthems; HISTORY |
| Since Code Veronica X really didn't dwell too much into Steve's background, save the tragedy of his parents, some of the beginning of his history is personal speculation, from the way Steve acts towards certain things, his abilities (how the hell he can pilot a jumbo seaplane for example), and his relationships towards other people. So, the next few paragraphs will be my personal theories about how little Steve grew up in an Umbrella-oriented world, before Rockfort. Then, of course, we'll fall right back into canon and all that mother jazz. December 4th, 1982; the Burnside couple finally had their first child. An official American citizen, the little baby boy was crowned Steven Burnside by his Canadian parents. He was the first child any of the researchers at the Arklay Facility had had. Father Burnside was completely ecstatic about having a son as was his wife – life couldn't have been better for the two. For the most part, Steve's childhood was fairly normal. He was enrolled in an elementary school when he was five years old and excelled wonderfully in the subjects of English and History; Math and Science were definitely not his forte, much to his father's dismay. The elder Burnside wanted his son to follow in his shoes, since Umbrella wanted and needed younger researchers on the team, what with the death of Alexia Ashford and the growth of both Doctors William Birkin and Albert Wesker. Unfortunately, Steve hadn't the desire or the attention span to actually find interest in such things as biology, even as he grew into his young teenage years. It was all about cars, blowing up random objects in the backyard, and causing mass havoc. It was only when Steve was fifteen did his life as a normal teenaged boy go in a totally different direction. Father Burnside wanted to make a leap in his career and with Albert Wesker now in the police department, William Birkin was getting the credit for everything – he even had a new lab given to him underneath Raccoon City. Much to his dismay, the elder Burnside hadn't even seen an increase in pay in the last six years. So, to get back at the higher ups, he decided to sell Umbrella's top secret information to the highest bidder. But as most people who betray the corporation, he was caught and ambushed in his home one night during supper. His wife was slaughtered by a Special Forces Unit, and both the elder Burnside and his son were hauled off and taken to Rockfort Island prison. There, Steve was separated from his father; both ended up on opposite ends of the island. But Steve didn't care – due to his father, his mother was now dead. What point would there be into seeing a horrible man like that – no, to him, his father had died right beside his mother. Now, for a young boy in prison with a handful of older, scummier men, the situation did not look good for young Steve. And of course, more than once, he had been rescued from near sexual assault by the main guard, Rodrigo. Thankfully, Steve found a sort of friend in the young prison guard, and Rodrigo taught the boy a few things – how to fire a gun, for example. And he showed Steve the blue prints of a few planes that were being shipped to the island. Steve found all of this extremely amusing and so, whenever he was allowed to, he would strike up conversation with Rodrigo through the bars of the cell, listen to the information he passed on, and internalized it until he readily knew the very mechanics of guns and some the techniques used to pilot an aircraft. After two years of learning from Rodrigo and enduring the prison, something amazing happened. Well, something that was amazing in Steve's mind – an outbreak spread on the prison, allowing him to free himself from the cell and cause mass havoc inside the prison walls. And lord, did he cause a bit of chaos. To him, killing zombies and zombie-related animals was awesome. And so, packed up with a few supplies, he made a little fort on top of a tower and mounted a machine gun on the top – any zombie that happened to come into range was obliterated by Steve and he couldn't have been a happier boy. Then, along came a girl and of course, young boyish instincts took over; at first, he shot at her, thinking she was a zombie, but when she shot back? Well, he decided it was time to show off a bit. Hell, it had been the first pair of boobs he had seen since he left the comforts of Raccoon City. She was a feisty one; at least, that was what he thought of initially. And while he wanted to get close, Steve knew it in his bones that people were far less reliable in panic-situations like this. So, he left her to her own demise and went off on his own. During the course of the outbreak, Steve grew close to the young girl, who he learned to be Claire Redfield; the two eventually formed a sort of relationship together, fending each other from whatever the Commander of the base set up for them; from Bandersnatches to trap-triggered rooms, both Steve and Claire supported each other. It was only when they met up with the Commander again and learned that he had multiple personality disorder and wanted to destroy both them and the base, did they really begin developing a connection to survive and get the hell off that piece of rock. Eventually, the two left the island using one of the planes Rodrigo had taught Steve about in his first two years at Rockfort. Burnside had retained that information and used it to get both Claire and him out before the island blew up. Thinking that they were on the road to freedom, Steve rejoiced with Claire. But unbeknownst to the two, Alfred Ashford, the commander of the prison, was right on their tail and through some unexplained phenomenon, was able to change the course direction of the aircraft, giving Steve absolutely no control over it. That was where the Antarctic saga began. Once the aircraft crashed on the Antarctic base, Steve and Claire once again separated and have another encounter with Alfred Ashford, who had, by this time, completely lost his mind. Alfred threatened to kill Claire for the millionth time, and Steve, again, pulled a kamikaze to save her. This time, Alfred was taken out and the two made their escape from the frozen hunk of ice. But their plans were foiled; Alfred actually survived the fall and the bullet wounds and had enough time to wake up his equally-deranged sister to take care of the two escapees. His sister, who became infuriated when he brother finally bit the big one, attacked the "snow-mobile" that Steve and Claire hijacked on their ride towards the Australian base. The two end up being dragged back to the base and they were, once again, separated and, out of sheer revenge, Alexia prepared Steve for an experiment she conducted on her father years earlier. Steve woke only to find himself restrained in some long hallway by both a large axe-like object and metallic restraints. He couldn't move, he couldn't really speak – all that he knew what that he felt extremely cold. The only thing that really brought his senses back was the arrival of Claire. But that was short lived; after Steven explained what Alexia had done to him, he found breathing to be a difficult process. If matters couldn't have been worse, his skin split open and that was the last thing he remembered as a human being. The rest of his existence was in the form of a beast – a Tyrant, as classified by the Umbrella Corporation. Alexia had injected him with the T-Veronica virus, changing him in a large reptilian-like beast, hell bent on destroying Claire. And he almost did too; but something, something still human, brought him to his senses and he freed his companion from one of Alexia's tentacle beasts. Unfortunately, that was also what killed him. Whatever the creature was, it tore a nice opening in Burnside's underbelly and as he converted back to human form, it was obvious that he was going to die. So his last words to Claire were that he loved her. And that is where his story as Landel's begins. |
